How it works
Out and About NZ makes use of wifi, data, or SMS texting connections. With data on, the app sends updates often. With data off, the app automatically sends an SMS text message with your location at regular intervals.
How it works out of cell coverage
Starlink satellites allow texting (SMS) for modern cellphones on certain mobile networks. The provider for NZ is One NZ and they list eligible phones and plans on their website. As of Nov 2025 this was most plans including prepay.
